Players reported working native HOTAS controls in the September 2026 WARDOGS tests, including a HOTAS option under Gamepad settings. Other players reported devices or individual axes failing to bind, so working support on one setup does not establish compatibility with every stick and throttle. [native-hotas] [detection-report]

An older developer reply dated 14 May said HOTAS was in the development pipeline at a low priority. That describes the earlier state; it should not override the later reports of players using the setting. [developer-may]

Check detection before adjusting sensitivity

The following checks help identify where input stops. They are a diagnostic sequence, not a tested universal fix. Save screenshots of your existing bindings before changing them so you can restore your setup.

  1. Check the device outside the game. Use Windows' game-controller test or your device manufacturer's own utility to see whether the stick, throttle and buttons register. If they do not register there, establish device detection before changing WARDOGS bindings.
  2. Check the game's HOTAS setting. The September setup author enabled HOTAS in the Gamepad section. Look for that option in your current build; its presence and location should be checked rather than inferred from an older tutorial. [native-hotas]
  3. Try one binding at a time. Check whether the game recognises the physical axis you move, then verify its direction and response in-game. A working stick axis does not prove that a second device or a small analogue thumbstick is recognised.
  4. Separate detection from handling. If the correct inputs register but the aircraft feels too sensitive, record the current sensitivity settings before adjusting one setting at a time. If an axis never registers, sensitivity changes do not test that detection problem.

The 3 September failure thread includes a Virpil Alphas setup that had worked previously but was no longer detected, plus an X56 user describing a small analogue-stick binding problem. These reports describe different symptoms; neither identifies a cause that can be applied to all hardware. [detection-report]

Can you mix HOTAS and keyboard in flight?

Several September players could not combine stick controls with keyboard inputs for helicopter flight while HOTAS was enabled. Another thread distinguishes returning to keyboard and mouse after leaving the helicopter from using both input methods during flight. [native-hotas] [hotas-thread]

If your plan depends on keyboard collective controls with a joystick, test that combination specifically. A successful flight using a complete HOTAS setup does not answer whether mixed input will work.

Report a reproducible failure

If Windows sees the device but WARDOGS does not, post to the game's Steam discussions with the game build or test date, device models, which axes fail and whether the HOTAS toggle is enabled. Include whether the same setup worked in an earlier test and a short capture of the failed binding attempt if available.

These details let the developer distinguish a device that never binds from a regression after an update. The cited reports do not provide an official device certification list.
